Purpose of the Group

The purpose of the group is to allow women who have experienced alcohol and associated problems at some point in their lives a chance to meet in a supportive environment.

The group is about making friendships and working on physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

Many women who have had difficulty with alcohol, have low self-esteem and self-confidence and so joining local community groups or engaging in activities is unlikely.

Aims of Amethyst
  • To offer women the opportunity to meet in a supportive and relaxed environment.

  • To offer women the opportunity to discuss social and health issues that are specific to women.

  • To offer women the opportunity to feel   confident about going out on their own or with friends socially and to regain social skills.

  • To help reduce stigma that the women may have about their alcohol problem.

  • To give the opportunity to meet with other women as part of a group.

  • To encourage e women to participate in the running and coordinating of the group when they feel ready.

Activities

The group runs a program lasting for 6-8 weeks with an evaluation at the end. The activities in the program are decided by the women in the group. The activities focus on women’s health, building self-confidence, learning new skills and going out and about.

The venue of the group varies each week depending on the activity.

The women are  invited to be involved in fundraising activities for Amethyst.

Referral Procedure

Women from Aberdeen and surrounding  areas can self-refer.

Prior to attendance, the woman would be expected to meet with a member of the group and to discuss what she expects and to go through the aims, purpose and timetable for the group. Women can join at any point in the timetable.

Amethyst is not about supporting women in dealing with their alcohol problem, therefore if a woman is struggling with her sobriety she would be assisted to access the appropriate supports. There would still be an opportunity to join the group at a later date.
