Mr MacAskill met Diane who told him how Alcohol Support had transformed her life since she was taken to the Designated Place for being drunk and incapable, and then moved to the hostel where she received support in dealing with her problems associated with alcohol.

Diane says "I have picked up the relationships with my children and I have a better understanding of alcoholism, I have learned not to hide and how to cope with the outside world and to accept that it is a problem I don't have to be ashamed about."

During his visit,  the Justice Minister heard about the difficulties associated with funding such facilities.

Kenny MacAskill meeting Harry Miller General Manager in HostelHe stated that "The wide-scale abuse of alcohol in Scotland should not be a problem for the taxpayer, the police or accident and emergency departments to bear," and he "felt profits from selling alcohol in Scotland could be used to help pick up the tab for projects aimed at helping people overcome their drink problems"
